Other Solid Cancers

In addition to brain cancers, solid tumors include many of the most common cancers such as breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate. These are broken into three categories based on their origin:

  1. Carcinoma – begins in organ tissue (cells) such as brain, breast and prostate.
  2. Sarcoma – begins in bone tissue, cartilage, fat, muscle, or blood vessels. A different type of cell which mutates to a different type of cancer.
  3. Melanoma – begins in the cells responsible for skin pigmentation, a third type of cancer growth.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women. There are different types of breast cancer, categorized based on the part of the breast they affect – the lobules (lobular), ducts (ductal), or connective tissue. The most common types of breast cancer are invasive ductal carcinoma and invasive lobular carcinoma.

  • New lumps under the breast or armpit
  • Swelling of the breast
  • Irritation, redness, or dimpling around the breast

Prostate cancer occurs when the cells in your prostate gland grow uncontrollably. This is a leading cause of death among men, as it often goes undetected. Most prostate cancers are adenocarcinomas (which develop from the gland cells), although there are other types that occur in rare cases. While it is possible for prostate cancer to spread quickly, it is more likely to grow slowly over time. Most men do not experience symptoms of prostate cancer, but if you do, they might include:
